The Akwesasne Tourism Working Group Awarded $2 Million in Federal Funding to Promote Tourism and Boost Economic Development Within the Territory

Akwesasne, NY- November 15th, 2016, the Akwesasne Tourism Working Group has been awarded federal funding in the amount of $2 Million, to be allocated to ATWG to promote tourism, employment opportunities, and economic development within the territory of Akwesasne.  US Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand made the announcement on Tuesday; with the funding allocated through the US Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS), Administration for Native Americans (ANA), and Sustainable Employment and Economic Development Strategies Program (SEEDS).  ATWP will receive the funding over the next five years, in the amount of $400,000 annually.

Senator Charles Schumer stated that, “these federal funds will give the Akwesasne Tourism Working Group the opportunity to support tomorrow’s tourism industry and local business owner’s right here in the North Country.  This smart, multi-million dollar federal investment will support entrepreneurship and the creation of good-paying, middle-class jobs through the areas burgeoning tourism industry for residents across Franklin County and its surrounding areas.”

The funds awarded are a collaborative effort made by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe, the Akwesasne Cultural Center & Museum, Onkwehon:we Arts Council, Mohawk Nation Council  of Chiefs, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Akwesasne Area Management Board, and the Native North American Travelling College.  Lindsay Tarbell, SRMT Community Planner, has been leading these efforts since the beginning, and implemental in obtaining this $2 million dollar grant.

SRMT Director of Economic Development, Christopher Thompson, says that the diversification of the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory economy is top priority, and they are currently expanding the broadband technology, investing in agricultural programs, as well as the development of cultural tourism within the territory.  “This award is a culmination of effort from local stakeholders within the Akwesasne community and has been led by Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Community Planner Lindsay Tarbell.  Together we will transform the way we invite, treat, and engage visitors to the North Country.”

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stated that, “This award will allow the Akwesasne Tourism Working Group to make a long-term investment in tourism, job creation and economic development.  The creating Akwesasne Tourism Industry Businesses and Jobs initiative will help stimulate economic growth in the region and showcase the community for visitors in the North Country.”
