144 golfers and a number of businesses helped raise $107,400 for the Strong Roots Charitable Foundation(SRCF). This year, their annual Charity Cup made a triumphant return after taking a year off during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The event, hosted at the Malone Golf Club on August 27, 2021, is the most successful golf tournament held by the organization yet.
“This year’s Annual Charity Cup was a tremendous success, and is an indication of the strong commitment and desire of businesses to give back to our community,” said Chessie Thomas, an administrator for the SRCF. “This year’s beneficiary is the Welcome Home Project, and after minor expenses, the balance of funds will go to them.”
The Akwesasne Welcome Project helps formerly incarcerated community members with the challenges they face when initially getting out of jail. One of their most notable ventures is the Transitional Housing Project, aka, “tiny home” — a place where Akwesasronon can live as they transition from prison back into community life.
Some of the highlights of the day included a $50,000 hole-in-one opportunity, a Mohawk Auction, and a live auction that featured an NHL jersey and stick autographed by Brandon Montour. In addition, artwork and other items were available, showcasing the talent of local Akwesasronon.
The Strong Roots Charitable Foundation provides support to empower and enrich the lives of First Nations youth and elders with a strong emphasis on health and safety.
