Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Chief of Police Matthew Rourke and Lieutenant Decota Thompson attended the 122nd Annual International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference which was held in Chicago on Wednesday, October 27, 2015.  In attendance was the President of the United States Barrack Obama, who addressed the attendees and spoke about issues currently facing Law Enforcement.
Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Chief of Police Matthew Rourke said over all it was a good experience. “President’s speech was good. The experience was positive because he was addressing issues that police face in this country everyday, whether on territory or off”.
The president aptly praised the work of America’s law enforcement community. He mentioned the “astonishing statistic†that “over the last 20 years, police have helped cut the violent crime rate and homicide rate in America by almost half.†He also noted that “over the past few years, the number of police officers shot and killed in the line of duty has fallen to their lowest levels in decades,†with 2013 seeing “the fewest cops shot and killed in the line of duty since 1887″.
Obama praised police for their work but also called for “serious and robust debate over fairness in law enforcement.”
The annual conference offers seminars and hosts speakers that address a wide variety of issues, including challenges that Law Enforcement face today.
