A partnership between the St. Lawrence River Institute, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has led to plans for the Great Akwesasne River Cleanup and the entire community is invited to participate. Help us restore the rivers around Akwesasne and take pride in being the water protectors and keepers of the earth.
The event will be hosted at the St. Regis Recreation Centre on Friday, August 4, 2017 (also MCA’s Staff Activity Day). Register yourself or your team and select your area of cleanup. The Great Akwesasne River Cleanup will include the shorelines in Kana:takon (St. Regis), Tsi Snaihne (Snye) and along the St. Regis River into the southern portion of the territory. T-shirts and lunch will be provided to all participants from the St. Lawrence River Institute.
This is the second annual river cleanup organized by the St. Lawrence River Institute through funding they have received from the province of Ontario and the RBC Bluewater Fund. Last year’s cleanup focused on the St. Lawrence River shorelines (including Kawehno:ke) and was a great success with over 100 volunteers from Akwesasne and over 12 tonnes of garbage removed from both sides of the river.
The rivers in Akwesasne – which include the St. Lawrence, St. Regis, Snye Channel, and Raquette – providing drinking water to thousands of people and a habitat for countless species of animals and plants. However, trash and pollution degrade the rivers’ health, safety and beauty. It is our responsibility to maintain it, for future generations.
