The 2017 Miss Indian World Competition was held during the week of April 25-29, 2017 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.A. It is part of the Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow.
In front of a sold out audience on Saturday night, at the Tingley Colisuem on April 29, 2017, Raven Swamp, 23, of the Mohawk Nation at Kahnawake, became the newly crowned 2017-2018 Miss Indian World.
Swamp, who wore Niio Perkins designs from Akwesasne, did her presentation for the competition in Kanien’kéha first and then English, and she also performed am Iroquois song and dance. Her presentation touched on parts of the Creation Story, which was her intention heading into the competition, which was to ensure her Mohawk language, culture and traditions were front and center.
Swamp’s performance was taped to Facebook Live and after her win, friends flooded her public post to share their congratulations. Swamp who is obviously brimming with joy and confidence, wrote on her Facebook page, “Niá:wen! Niá:wen! Niá:wen! I had so many people come up to me and shake my hand and congratulate me on doing it all in Kanien’kéha! Really feeling this positive energy guys “.
According to the Gathering of Nations website, the new MIW is expected to spend her year traveling, when opportunities arise, extensively throughout the U.S.A., Canada and Internationally and promoting cultural awareness, diversity and the Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow globally.
The Miss Indian World(MIW) is much more than a competition. It last over 5-days as MIW contestants share an exciting journey of “sisterhood†as they represent their tribes & communities as they participate in a full stage production of the Miss Indian World Traditional Talent Presentations which culminating in the crowning of the new Miss Indian World 2017-2018.
