The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) will be offering a second round of financial assistance to Akwesasne Businesses that have been impacted by the Covid-19 Pandemic. The assistance comes in the form of a one-time payment which is meant to off-set financial difficulties that came as a result of closures or reduction in service.
SRMT Director of Economic Development, James Lazore states, “small businesses are a vital part of the Akwesasne community and we are proud to be able to help them during their time of need.”
With funding provided by the Corona Virus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES), the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Office of Economic Development is reaching out to small businesses on the southern portion of the territory. Businesses that meet qualifications will then be assisted through the Tribe’s Small Business Relief Program.
The United States Government appropriated $8 Billion in funds dedicated to assistance as a result of ongoing impact to tribes by the pandemic. A portion of this funding is allocated as non-taxable “grants” specifically dedicated to tribal businesses hit hard by the required closures since March.
Over 158 businesses were aided during the first round of financial assistance, which ended on July 24th. Eligibility includes businesses open for at least a year prior to the pandemic, and owned by an enrolled tribal member. Businesses such as gas stations and convenience stores, restaurants, craftspeople, retail operations and part-time vendors are all eligible for assistance. Informational letters have been sent to all tribally registered businesses, explaining the application process.
The deadline for the current Small Business Relief Program is Seskeha/August 31, 2020. Those interested may contact James Lazore or Edward Smoke at (518) 358-2835 to request an online application. The application and supporting documentation can be submitted to economic.development@srmt-nsn.gov.
